Some Say Get Moving. But Also Important, Get Creative!

My Mum has asked me countless times now, how can I write so many different songs. This question is coming from someone who could easily write ten different songs in a day. Somehow she just doesn’t know this. She is a coloratura, the highest form of soprano. Every time you say a word she practically answers with a melody behind her words. She is poetic. She is beyond creative. She IS a music note. Her entire life has been consumed with music since she was a child. As an adult she has taught piano, voice, directed music groups, designed music programs, all of it. But yet to her still… it confounds her to think how I can write so much material. Of all people, I would think she is the one who would understand this the most.

It’s natural, I tell her. It is a natural action for me in a day, to either write to a new track or to write a jingle for one of our cats. Lucky them! Some they love, others not so much. Yes, I can tell! ha

But there was a time a year or so ago where I hit a writer’s block. And I was really confused by this that I wrote about it. Thing is, I hear a song in everything! -I have said so many times. And I wasn’t hearing a melody in anything, at that time. The infamous writer’s block all writers talk about at some point. Ugh, it had finally hit me. And I don’t think I will ever really know why. Or how. But I missed having that creative release. Artists need a release of creativity. Some artists don’t seem to make that connection. They can’t sort out why they aren’t feeling their best, or why they are feeling unhappy, even. And that’s when I ask, are you writing? Are you working on something creative, if not music? Because the creative outlet helps keep an artist balanced. It is helpful to most anyone. So if you aren’t in creation mode, get there. With something! It is a gift to have creation as a solution to problems, because then we feel better while also having something to show for it. Voila! xx
